Dungeon of the Day: Goblin Mine #1

The goblins are at it again. Having discovered a small but pure vein of iron near a small village, they have taken up residence, enslaved several of the villagers to work as laborers, and scared everyone else away from the area.

Entry

There are two entry opportunities. The first is the main entrance, which opens directly onto a gangway. The second is a tiny cave-in that would allow adventurers to rappel down from the surface unnoticed. This rappel entry gives players two options: swing over and land on top of the foreman's office or continue down to a very dark area of the lower level below the office.

Gangway

On entering the main entrance, the upper level gangway runs straight ahead, through a tunnel in the rock, into a main level room (the Guard Barracks), and then tunnels to the right to connect the "rear" stairwell. The same gangway also runs to the right from the entrance back to a spiral staircase that also heads down to the lower level. The gangway allows patrolling guards to periodically look over the rail and watch what is happening below.

The gangway is supported by mountings to the rock faces as well as four stalagmites that rise from the floor of the mine below. Together, these features make the gangway surprisingly stable and very difficult to bring down.

Foreman's Office

Goblins are hardly organized, so the "foreman's office" is mostly a glorified den of goblin iniquity. It has two "sky lights" (read: holes in the ceiling) and the inside wooden walls are painted with tar -- a feature that acts as both a sound dampener and protection from the flames of mounted torches.

To get to the office from the gangway, there is a makeshift wooden plank that is easily traversed by goblins but would be slow-going for adventurers. The plank can be pulled in by the foreman if he gets spooked.

The foreman's office has two windows that face north -- allowing anyone inside to casually monitor the gangway.

Stairwells

The stairwells are mostly unremarkable, however the "rear" stairwell also doubles as a bathroom for slaves and guards alike -- so the stench is unpleasant to say the least.

Lower Level Mine

The largest room on the lower level is the mine proper -- where imprisoned villagers work unhealthy hours smashing the rocks of the north wall to get to the iron. The south wall was once part of the excavation but clearly has been abandoned. There are also four stalagmites that support the gangway above and eight thin wooden posts that support the foreman's office above.

East Barracks

The eastern most room on the lower level is the barracks. It is so crammed full of bunks that you can only get around the room by crawling on the beds.

An enterprising prisoner has, in his spare time, dug a tunnel into the rock in the rear of the East Barracks and squirreled away a tiny cache full of small gemstones he has found.

Guard Barracks

Other than the "rear" stairwell, the only other room on the western side of the lower level is the Guard Barracks. This is considerably more posh than the East Barracks where the slaves live and is the only of the rooms that the prisoners are still being forced to expand. From the look of this room, clearly this particular squad of goblins is living the high life and perhaps keeping some of the better finds for themselves.

Deeper Still

It may seem to the adventurers (if you want to go this route) that this complex couldn't have been built by a squad of goblins and a dozen slaves. Perhaps most of this was here before -- as clued in by some of the nearly straight walls that goblins wouldn't have bothered to measure. Why would that be? Who built this place? Are there clues? Writing? Tool marks?

If you do decide to expand on this, then you need to explain why someone would build this complex hundreds of years ago and then leave behind the iron ore. Or is it ore? Is it, instead, a gigantic buried iron automoton that was trapped under a cave-in (perhaps intentionally) and the miners have been digging up pieces of its outstretched hand.

Is there ANOTHER secret room on this map that I didn't notice? Is there a secret curse on this place that I didn't know about? Show me up in the comments below. Feel free to change anything you see here and, if you like this map, share it with your friends on Twitter and Facebook.
